Summer Patch Lawn Disease in Missouri: Root Damage That Shows Up in August Heat

If your lawn develops straw-colored, sunken patches in late July or August β€” often in a ring shape with green grass in the middle β€” and it happens in the same spots every year, you may be dealing with summer patch. It is a root disease caused by the fungus Magnaporthiopsis poae, and it mostly attacks Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue, and annual bluegrass. The roots rot below the soil line, so by the time the damage shows up, the lawn has been struggling for weeks.

Here is the part that matters for most St. Charles County homeowners: tall fescue, the most common lawn grass around here, is highly resistant to summer patch. That means a lot of local lawns never see it. But if you have bluegrass, a bluegrass-heavy mix, or a shady fine fescue area, summer patch is worth knowing about.

What Is Summer Patch?

Summer patch is a fungal disease that infects the roots, crowns, and rhizomes of susceptible grasses. University of Missouri Extension lists it among the common turf diseases in the state, and it is most severe on Kentucky bluegrass.

The fungus lives in the soil and on old infected plant material. It starts infecting roots in the spring, when soil temperatures reach about 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Then it sits there while the root system slowly gets worse. The visible damage usually does not show until midsummer, when heat and drought stress hit and the damaged roots cannot pull up enough water.

That delay is why the disease feels like it comes out of nowhere. The infection started months earlier. You are just seeing the result in August.

How to Identify Summer Patch

Summer patch has a recognizable look once you know what to check.

Common signs:

  • Circular patches or rings of straw-colored, sunken grass, from a few inches to three feet across
  • A β€œfrog-eye” or doughnut shape: dead ring with healthy grass surviving in the middle
  • Patches that appear in midsummer heat, often after a stretch of hot, humid weather
  • An orange or bronze tint along the outer edge of a patch while the disease is active
  • Grass that looks wilted and drought-stressed even when you are watering
  • Roots, crowns, and rhizomes that are dark brown or black and rotten when you dig them up

The root check is the key. Cut a small square of sod from the edge of a patch, shake off the dirt, and look. Healthy bluegrass roots are white and firm. With summer patch, they are dark, mushy, and falling apart. Affected plants also pull up easily because the root system has already collapsed.

Summer patch gets confused with several other lawn problems. The differences matter because the treatments are not the same.

Summer patch is a root disease, and so is necrotic ring spot β€” the two are close cousins that used to be lumped together as β€œFusarium blight.” If your rings show up in spring and fall as well as summer, it might be necrotic ring spot instead. If you cannot tell the difference, have a professional or a plant diagnostic lab take a look.

Why Summer Patch Shows Up in August

The fungus attacks roots in spring when soil temperatures hit 65 degrees. Then it needs the right set of summer conditions to do visible damage:

  • Daytime temperatures above 82 degrees
  • Moisture β€” either frequent irrigation or long rainy stretches
  • Heat stress on the grass, especially in full sun
  • Compacted soil that restricts root growth
  • Thatch over half an inch thick

Anything that makes roots weaker makes summer patch worse. That is why the disease hits hardest on sunny, exposed areas, compacted paths, and low-mown lawns.

The conditions that encourage it, according to extension research, include soil pH at 6.5 or above, too much nitrogen in the spring, potassium deficiency, poor drainage, over-irrigation, and heavy thatch. Notice a pattern: most of those are things that reduce root growth. Summer patch is a root disease, so a lawn with shallow, stressed roots is the perfect target.

The Good News for Fescue Lawns

If you have a tall fescue lawn β€” which is the case for most of St. Charles County β€” summer patch is rarely your problem. Tall fescue and perennial ryegrass are highly resistant to it. The fungus can still stress a mixed lawn, but the fescue in the blend tends to survive and fill in the dead bluegrass.

This is actually one of the clearest ways to tell what you are dealing with. Brown patch loves tall fescue and shows up as big brown circles in humid summer weather. Summer patch, on the other hand, tends to leave fescue standing while bluegrass areas collapse.

So before you panic about a dying patch of lawn, check what grass you actually have. If your whole lawn is tall fescue, summer patch is unlikely to be the cause, and something like brown patch or a dormant lawn is a better guess.

How to Manage and Prevent Summer Patch

There is no quick cure once summer patch is visible. The fungus is in the roots, and the lawn needs a season or more of good cultural care to recover. Prevention is the real strategy, and it is mostly about growing deep roots.

Numbered plan:

  1. Raise the mowing height. Low mowing means shallow roots. Keep bluegrass around 2.5 to 3 inches and fescue at 3.5 to 4 inches during summer stress.
  2. Water deep and infrequently. Light, frequent watering keeps roots near the surface and makes the disease worse. Aim for about one inch of water per week, applied in one or two soakings early in the morning.
  3. Core aerate compacted areas. Clay soil around here compacts easily, and compaction is one of the main triggers for summer patch. Fall aeration helps roots recover before the next season.
  4. Reduce thatch. If the thatch layer is over half an inch, dethatching or aggressive aeration is in order.
  5. Hold the spring nitrogen. Excess nitrogen in spring feeds the fungus and pushes soft, shallow growth. Use slow-release sources and keep rates reasonable.
  6. Watch soil pH. Summer patch is worse when pH creeps above 6.5. Acidifying nitrogen sources like ammonium sulfate can slowly bring pH down on bluegrass lawns. Test your soil first so you know where you are starting.
  7. Overseed with resistant grasses. If bluegrass areas keep dying, overseeding with tall fescue or perennial ryegrass is the single most effective long-term fix. Those grasses do not get summer patch.

Fungicide Timing: The Preventive Window

Fungicides for summer patch work, but only when applied preventively. That is the part most homeowners miss.

The treatment window opens in spring, when soil temperatures reach about 65 degrees β€” usually late April to May in Missouri. The standard program is two to three applications on 28-day intervals, using fungicides from the DMI, QoI, or MBC classes. Applications need to be watered in so the product reaches the crowns and upper roots where the fungus lives.

Curative applications, made after you see the damage in August, generally give poor results. The disease is already in the roots, the lawn is stressed, and the fungus stops being active once soil temperatures cool. That is why waiting until you see the frog-eye patches means you have already missed the effective window for that year.

A couple of honest notes: preventive fungicide programs for summer patch are often too expensive for a typical home lawn, and they only make sense if your lawn has a confirmed history of the disease. For most homeowners, the cultural practices above β€” mowing height, watering, aeration, pH, and overseeding β€” are the right first move.
